FORTUNE COOKIE by Josi S. Kilpack ~ Review & Giveaway

Fortune Cookie Tour

Sadie Hoffmiller has always liked things to be just so. A place for everything and everything in its place. Order over chaos. And of all things Sadie should be able to control, her own wedding is at the top of the list.

With the big day just three weeks away, Sadie is busily adding the perfect final touches to her wedding plans. But the arrival of a mysterious letter that bears a San Francisco postmark and no return address could change everything. The only person Sadie knows in San Francisco is her older sister, Wendy, whom she hasn't seen or heard from since their mother's funeral nearly fifteen years ago.

Sadie has faced off with murderers and crooks in recent years, yet the potential of her sister reentering her life is both overwhelming and frightening. But, as Sadie soon discovers, the letter is just the beginning. Wendy's world turns out to be a place of unanswered questions, twisted truths, and more than one motive for murder.

The more Sadie digs into her sister’s past, the more she places her own future at risk.
REVIEW

What would you do if you found out the person who loved to torture and torment you more than anything as a child and teenager died.  What if that person was your sister?  Sadie Hoffmiller should be happily preparing to get married and start a new life with her fiancĂ©, Pete Cunningham.  Unfortunately, with less than a month to go before the big day, Sadie just might not make it to the wedding.
The last time Sadie saw her older sister, Wendy, was fifteen years ago, at their mother’s funeral.  After the funeral, Sadie tried to reach out to her sister but got no response in return.  Now, with an unexpected letter, Sadie’s life is about to be turned upside down.  Sadie’s nephew, a person she and her family were never sure actually existed, writes to tell Sadie that Wendy was found dead in her apartment of natural causes.  Eddie asks Sadie to come and help pack up Wendy’s belongings.  Though part of her is hesitant to do so, Sadie does, thinking it will bring closure.
Upon arriving in San Francisco, Sadie is in for quite a few shocks.  Pete starts to act differently, she has no idea how to interact with her newfound nephew and things about Wendy’s life just aren’t adding up.
While confirming beliefs about her sister, Sadie also makes new discoveries.  With the PI in her realizing something is wrong, Sadie starts to ask questions.  Unfortunately for her, she doesn’t know who she can trust.  Sadie is going to have to fight for her life and have faith in both herself and Pete if she has any hope of getting out of this situation.
It took me a while to figure out where Josi was going with this story.  I knew the mystery was there, I just wasn’t sure exactly where it was.  I was surprised to find myself feeling sorry for Sadie during her time in San Francisco, as far as dealing with her nephew, his family, and Pete.  When you say a book has surprises, that was definitely the case with Fortune Cookie.  When you think you have everything figured out, think again.
I went into reading this book thinking it was the last book in the series.  To say I was disappointed would be an understatement.  While I haven’t read the entire series, I have come to love Sadie.  I am now patiently waiting for the next book in the series to come out.
